Solar in South Africa — common questions

How much are electricity prices going up?

NERSA approved an average 8.76% increase for Eskom direct customers from 1 April 2026, and a further 8.83% from April 2027. Municipalities face a 9.01% increase in Eskom's bulk price from 1 July 2026, which they pass on through their own tariffs. Increases have been running at almost three times consumer inflation.

How long does solar take to pay for itself?

It depends on your bill, how much of your usage solar covers, and the system price. Because tariffs rise faster than inflation, every year on the grid costs more than the last, which shortens payback. Put a real installer quote into the calculator for an accurate figure.

Are solar systems getting cheaper?

Component prices have fallen by up to 30% in some cases, while grid electricity keeps rising.

Will I be called if I use the calculator?

No. You are only contacted if you fill in the form and tick the consent box — then up to three vetted installers may contact you with quotes.
